Matthew is an associate in the corporate energy and infrastructure team based in London.
Prior to becoming an associate in Australia, Matthew served in the Australian Army. Matthew continues to utilise the unique set of skills that he developed in the military when assisting clients at Herbert Smith Freehills, such as his ability to overcome complex challenges whilst thinking analytically, rationally, and laterally.
In 2020 Matthew received Herbert Smith Freehills' Changemaker Award for leading the Brisbane office to sign the Prime Minister's Veteran Employment Commitment, establishing the firm's Veterans' Network and raising awareness of the skills and attributes of veterans at Herbert Smith Freehills.
Matthew was also the inaugural recipient of the Ramsay Postgraduate Scholarship in 2021 to study the Master of Law program at the University of Cambridge and also received a New Colombo Plan Scholarship from the Australian Government in 2015 to study law at the University of Hong Kong.
Matthew's experience includes:
- advising Newcrest in respect of all facets of its Cadia gold mine expansion project, including the preparation and negotiation of construction, engineering and procurement contracts and business-as-usual operations.
- advising BHP on the development of its greenfield South Flank iron ore project including drafting bespoke construction and major procurements contracts and assisting with contract administration during project execution.
- acting for the principal of a wind farm in relation to urgent interlocutory relief as well as related delay and defects claims.
- advising Adani in relation to the proposed development of the Carmichael mine and railway, including advising on contracts for the design and construction of the mine and procurement of major items of fleet.
- acting for an Australian mining company in arbitration proceedings in relation to a dispute arising from a contract for the supply of mobile fleet to a mine in Queensland.

Matthew holds a Bachelor of Laws (with Distinction) and a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice (with Distinction) from Griffith University in Australia and a Master of Law (with Strong Upper Second-Class Honours) from the University of Cambridge.
