Susan is a Senior Associate and Solicitor Advocate in our international arbitration practice.

Susan specialises in dispute resolution with a particular focus on international arbitration in the energy sector.   Her practice comprises multi-jurisdictional work subject to a range of governing laws.  She has been involved in advising and representing clients in disputes from a range of sectors and jurisdictions in international arbitration proceedings (under the LCIA, SIAC and ICC Rules), expert determination and enforcement proceedings.

Susan was admitted as a Solicitor in England and Wales in March 2012 and has spent time on secondment to the dispute resolution teams at BP and Stemcor, and in Herbert Smith Freehills' Dubai office.

She has been published on issues relating to arbitration and energy disputes and writes regularly on legal developments in relation to international arbitration.

Susan also appears regularly before the Asylum Support Tribunal on a pro bono basis, and has appeared as an advocate in ICC arbitration proceedings.

Susan's experience includes advising and representing:

  • a confidential client in an ICC arbitration in London in relation to the development of an Ultra-Mega Power Project in India and related claims
  • a Chinese state-owned oil and gas company and its UK subsidiary in a SIAC arbitration, valued in excess of USD 5.5 billion in relation to a joint investment in offshore oil and gas assets
  • two multinational oil companies on potential arbitration proceedings against a West African State in relation to customs issues
  • a global supplier of steel tubes for the energy industry in ICC arbitration proceedings relating to a contract governed by the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods and English Law
  • BP on contentious issues in contract and in tort, and in multiple jurisdictions and fora, arising from the incident at the In Amenas gas facility in Algeria in January 2013

 

 

Background

Susan holds a first class LLB degree in Scots Law and Spanish Law from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and an LLM degree in Public International Law from the University of Helsinki, Finland.
