A cross-practice team from Herbert Smith Freehills' London office has helped the firm's alumnus Robert Rothkopf launch Balance Legal Capital, a new litigation funding venture.
Balance Legal Capital is a private fund which invests in commercial disputes at all stages of the litigation or arbitration process. It was co-founded by Robert and a former Freshfields lawyer, Simon Burnett. Its investment committee boasts some of the leading names in the disputes field, including Lord Gold, the former Herbert Smith senior partner, and Ian Terry, the former Freshfields managing partner and head of litigation.
The Herbert Smith Freehills team advised on all aspects of the fund formation, including corporate, regulatory and tax. It was led by corporate partners Mike Flockhart and Aurell Taussig and funds senior associate Nish Dissanayake, and included associates Shantanu Naravane, Jane Dodd and Candice Lambeth.
Robert Rothkopf commented: "Mike and his team provided me with the crucial support and advice necessary to make Balance Legal Capital a reality. Knowing I had the best people leading us through the complexities of the set-up process allowed me to focus on the capital and our excellent team."
Mike Flockhart said: "We were delighted to assist Robert and his partners in the formation of Balance Legal Capital. It's a terrific business with a very strong foundation and a high quality team behind it. It deserves to succeed and we look forward to helping it to grow and thrive in the future."
