We are pleased to announce that we will be holding a seminar on resource nationalism on 13 September 2018.

We have been monitoring the re-emergence of resource nationalism in Africa (and elsewhere) in recent months – see in particular our recent publications on developments in Tanzania here and here, in relation to the DRC here, and in relation to South Africa here.  We have also been working with clients who have been affected by recent regulatory changes in their engagements with governments, and considering how affected companies can rely on investment treaties to protect their position – see our post here.

We have also looked at the upheaval and uncertainty in mineral regulation in parts of Africa and how the resurgence of resource nationalism highlights the importance of investment treaty protections here, as part of the bi-annual publication Inside Arbitration

As such, we have a unique perspective to share on how, from a legal, commercial and practical viewpoint, companies can best protect themselves against such actions before they occur, and how they can respond to the relevant regulatory change once introduced.

Speakers will include partner Peter Leon, the global co-chair of our Africa Group and one of the world's pre-eminent mining lawyers, and partner Andrew Cannon and Of Counsel Iain Maxwell from our Public International Law and International Arbitration team, who both have particular expertise in investment arbitration and other disputes involving States.
