Maria is a financial services lawyer, specialising in investment funds and financial services regulation.

Maria recently joined Herbert Smith Freehills and is an experienced financial services lawyer, with funds expertise gained in Guernsey and New Zealand.

She has significant expertise in managed funds, financial markets conduct law (including in relation to financial adviser requirements), and insurance law, having worked with a range of banks, issuers, investors, arrangers and trustees/custodians across these areas. She also has experience helping clients meet their regulatory compliance obligations in relation to anti money laundering.

Maria is named as a Rising Star in the Legal 500 for New Zealand. She has recently joined Herbert Smith Freehills’ financial services team, which is ranked Tier 1 for Fintech and Financial Services Regulatory in the Legal 500 and Band 1 for Financial Services Regulation and for Investment Funds in Chambers for Australia in 2023.

Maria was named a NZ Lawyer Elite Woman for 2022, an award which celebrates New Zealand’s top female legal talent. She was the only Senior Associate among the winners (which otherwise consisted of partners, C-Suite Executives and Counsel).

Maria was also joint senior author of the year in her previous firm for 2022.
